WATERBORO — Tanner Cortes hit Gordon Beckwith with a screen pass on a third-and-long in the fourth quarter and Beckwith rumbled into Massabesic territory to spark a late rally and help lift Lewiston to a 27-22 win over the Mustangs on Friday night.
Shortly after Beckwith’s gain, Garrett Poussard powered into the end zone from six yards out to put the visiting Blue Devils (2-5) in front for good.
“We’ll take a win anytime,” Lewiston coach Bruce Nicholas said. “It looked like we might cruise early, but we know better.”
The Devils jumped out to an early 19-0 lead, largely behind Cortes’ arm. The QB connected on a handful of passes, notably a 60-yard strike to Brock Belanger for a score in the second quarter.
But the Mustangs clawed back. They added a score before halftime, and then consecutive scores in the third and fourth quarters to take a 22-19 lead before Lewiston finally responded.
