DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am the activities director for Bolster Heights Residential Care Facility in Auburn. I am asking for donations of unused greeting cards for Christmas, birthdays, etc. We give each resident a card on their birthday and many times they will request cards to send to their families for different occasions. I would also like to ask for donations to fill our Christmas stockings this year for the residents. We accept unused and unexpired items such as small lotions, hand sanitizers, pens, toiletries, non-perishable snack items and candies (unfortunately, we cannot accept anything homemade). Popcorn and sodas for movie days would also be greatly appreciated. We are always looking for puzzles, word searches, coloring books, cloth for projects (big or small), craft supplies, gift cards and hair care items to give as gifts on their birthdays, as well as movies in VHS or DVD format, music, CDs and books. We accept all genres for them to enjoy. Everything received will be welcome and met with a thankful heart! — Debbie Purcell, Activities Coordinator, Bolster Heights Residential Care Facility.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I would like to stump you with my question but perhaps you can answer it for me. There was a Hollywood movie star by the name of Rita Hayworth who was married to Ali Khan and had a daughter by the name of Yasmin — I remember this name well, for in Berlin, we have a flowering shrub named jasmine (you call it mock orange) and it is very sweetly fragranced. This Ali Khan was the son of Aga Khan III who would sit on a scale and the people would bring him gold and precious stones with which to weigh him. So many people are poor in their country, yet they honor such a man. Is he perhaps already dead? I have not seen any news about him here or in magazines. Thank you for the information. — Heidi, Dryden.
ANSWER: Prince Aly Khan was married to Rita Hayworth and they had a child, Princess Yasmin. Aly Khan’s father, Aga Khan III, was the head of the Ismaili Muslims until his death in 1957. He did not take money and was not worshipped at his famous jubilee celebrations like the one you have described, but raised money instead.
In the Ismaili tradition, the Imam’s jubilee celebrations offer occasions to launch new social, cultural and economic development projects. All of the gold and jewels went to fund social programs across Asia and East Africa. The current Aga Khan is Prince Aly Khan’s eldest son, born Shah Karim al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV and is now known as Mawlana Hazar Imam. We do not see a lot about them in the news, but you can find out more about what they do by visiting the Aga Khan Development Network’s website, akdn.org.
