Friday, 7 p.m.

The Hornets showed in a losing effort to Falmouth that they are better than their record says they are. Falmouth coach John Fitzsimmons said as much. Leavitt is at home for a second straight week, hosting a Rangers team that has fed on Class B South’s lower tier.

EDWARD LITTLE (2-3) AT SANFORD (3-2)

Friday, 7 p.m.

The Spartans have scored at least 20 points in every game, so Edward Little will have to go on the road and get its potentially-potent passing game going. The Red Eddies are decimated at running back, to the air is where a win will likely have to come from.

OXFORD HILLS/BUCKFIELD (2-3) AT DEERING (2-3)

Friday, 7 p.m.

Both these teams are trying to figure out who they are and where they belong. That’s a scary situation six weeks into the season, but a win in this game might mean a home playoff game. The Vikings at least are coming off a big last week over Massabesic, while the Rams played Bonny Eagle close.

TRAIP (1-3) AT DIRIGO (2-2)

Friday, 7 p.m.

The Cougars got back on track in a big way last week against Maranacook, the same team the Rangers earned their only win against. And both have been blown out by Lisbon in recent weeks. Dirigo gets to stay at home in this matchup, which means a long trip for Traip. Home-field advantage, maybe?

NOKOMIS (0-5) AT MT. BLUE (1-4)

Friday, 7 p.m.

Mt. Blue finally found enough offense to go along with its improving defense. The Warriors have been able to score, but their defense has been Swiss cheese. The Cougars need to take advantage of that if they want to start a winning streak.

FRYEBURG (3-2) AT POLAND (1-4)

Friday, 7 p.m.

Both teams played in shutouts last week, with the Raiders dealing one out and the Knights being dealt one. Fryeburg has scored a combined 88 points the last two weeks, including a shocking road win at Yarmouth. Poland has scored barely half that in five games this season. Tall task for the Knights defense.

SPRUCE MOUNTAIN (3-2) AT YARMOUTH (3-2)

Friday, 7 p.m.

The story heading into this matchup has been a tale of the last two weeks. Spruce Mountain has gone 2-0, outscoring opponents 97-6, while the Clippers have dropped two straight, losing big at home to Fryeburg and bigger on the road at Wells. The Phoenix hope to keep flying high on the artificial turf at Yarmouth.

GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER (0-5) AT CAPE ELIZABETH (5-0)

Friday, 7 p.m.

This one could get ugly. In a hurry. The Capers have an unstoppable offense and stout defense. The Patriots have a defense that has been unable to stop everybody except Lake Region, and an offense that has struggled to score. And they have to go on the road and face a crowd that is wild with the excitement of winning.

LEWISTON (1-4) AT PORTLAND (4-1)

Friday, 7 p.m.

Two big schools from two of the state’s biggest cities. The host Bulldogs will look for another big scoring day, after averaging nearly 39 points per game in their past four contests. Their worst output in that stretch was 35 points. The Blue Devils’ best this season is 34. A Lewiston win would be a big upset.

MOUNTAIN VALLEY (2-3) AT FREEPORT (2-3)

Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

Things were going well for the visiting Falcons before two humiliating losses. The host Falcons know humiliation after going 0-8 last year. Freeport is 2-0 at home this season, but now have to try and get a win against a very angry Mountain Valley team. Have you ever seen an angry falcon? I assume it’s not pleasant.

OAK HILL (3-1) AT LISBON (3-1)

Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

Among the preseason favorites in Class D South were these two teams, along with Winthrop/Monmouth, which dealt both the Raiders and Greyhounds their only losses. This becomes a big game, with the winner in line for a first-round playoff bye. This has been a heated and competitive rivalry in recent years. Should be fun!

WINTHROP/MONMOUTH (5-0) at MEDOMAK VALLEY (1-3)

Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

The Ramblers made it through a tough five-game stretch to open the season, and now get what should be an easy game. But they only have to look back to last year, when they went on the road and surprisingly lost to Boothbay. If Winthrop/Monmouth takes care of business and wins this one then the No. 1 seed in Class D South is the Ramblers’ for the taking.
