FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington made the costly mistake of turning its back on St. Joseph’s College in a men’s soccer game Wednesday.

And whenever the Beavers did turn around after letting their guard down, all they saw was the Monks’s procession to net

The Monks (5-1-2) scored three goals in both halves to glide away with a 6-0 victory at Leib Field. The Beavers (2-4) couldn’t keep pace with St. Joe’s offense, which had no problem dominating both halves.

“We looked good, We have been preparing for a while. This has been a good week of training,” St. Joe’s coach Adrian Dubois said. “We had a lot of objectives and we definitely accomplished them today.”

Nicholas Borowski started the ball rolling when he scored on a Brett Mattos feed 10:13 into the first half.

The Beavers held steady for the next 15 minutes before the Monks punched through UMF’s defense again with two more goals.

Mitchell Duncan scored an unassisted goal and Daniel Fox set up Kartikeya Swarup for the third goal of the game.

It was more of the same in the second half for both teams. The Monks kept on scoring against the struggling Beavers.

Dalton Gaumer, Cody Elliot and Fox all scored goals with Jesse Ramirez getting an assist on Fox’s point.

The Monks fired off 37 shots on net compared to UMF’s 7. Corner kicks were also in St. Joe’s favor, 8-2. UMF goalie Ronie Morales was under siege the entire game, making 14 saves.

“Like we said to the guys: ‘When you give up very avoidable goals like we did early on, it changes, the game,” UMF coach Tommy DiNuzzo said. “And I thought from there, St. Joe’s played really well.

“It is easy to play well when you are up. We have to learn from it. In the grand scheme of things, this game doesn’t matter. It’s a non-conference game and Husson is our focus on Saturday.”
