Objections to the proposed housing project off Loring Avenue in Auburn were never about the race of possible occupants. Many objections were from residents who were concerned about their taxes, abutting home values, schooling, etc., for the next 30 years.
In response to Jane Costlow’s letter, Sept. 11, I firmly believe that comments objecting to “trash” were because people do not want to see the neighborhood littered with trash. It did not refer to people who might reside in the development. “Trash” was not used as a racial term.
If people look at many areas near apartments or “rented townhouses,” they would see litter — trash. In the Loring Avenue neighborhood, there is little to none because residents take great pride in keeping the area clean. That is what was meant by trash.
That is a concern, as well as a tax increase that would most likely stem from that project.
Other concerns are where would any new school-age children go to school and where would the approximately 90 new residents work?
