DEAR SUN SPOTS: In response to the question about the former corn factory at 74 Lake Auburn Ave. in Auburn, I know it well. I have lived across the street for over 70 years.
I have many memories of the factory. Starting around age 6 or 7 I would sneak into the corn shop and the superintendent, Mrs. Davis, would catch me and kick me out. I spoke only French at the time so it took them a while to figure out my real name.
The corn shop employed a lot of people in town. I remember the large conveyer belts that carried the corn to the cutter and husker machines, chopping off the ends and peeling off the husks. In high school, I worked at the factory, making syrup for the canned corn in large tanks.
I have been here for many years and have many memories and photos to share with those who are interested. — Bob Berube, Auburn.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin will be offering a 12-hour Tutor Training Workshop on October 1 and 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Auburn Library. We would appreciate your assistance with getting the word out, as we have a waiting list of adults who have a critical need for a one-on-one tutor. In particular, we have individuals from other countries who are fluent in French and need to work on their English reading, writing and conversation skills. We also have folks in Turner whose primary language is Spanish. Tutors for native English speakers are needed as well.
For information please call Tahlia at (207) 333-4785 or email info@literacyvolunteersandro.org.
Many details can also be found on our website at http://www.literacyvolunteersandro.org. Registration is required by September 23.
Literacy changes lives. Thank you so much for getting the word out. Over the years, we have found many wonderful tutors through Sun Spots. — Tahlia Chamberlain, Auburn.
