GRAY — The owner of a home that burned in Gray Saturday morning says the bunny that was resuscitated has died.
Jill Bearce says the bunny died Monday. “He fought really hard but just couldn’t gain his strength back,” Bearce said.
Crews responded to 157 Center Road around 11 a.m. Saturday for a report of a fire and found heavy fire in the kitchen along with smoke and heat damage throughout the building.
Investigators say seven to eight animals died, including goats, dogs and cats. The bunny was resuscitated but later died.
“We hate to see anybody lose their pets,” said Sgt. Joel Davis with the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office. “We wish it had a different outcome, but again, no one was home and they couldn’t get out, that’s all.”
Bearce was not home at the time of the fire.
Investigators say the fire was caused by combustibles that were too close to a heat source. It appears a gas burner was partially left on.
A GoFundMe page has been setup to help Bearce with some of the costs.
