DEAR SUN SPOTS: Since the Moxie store closed in Lisbon, is there another place to purchase Moxie memorabilia? — Donald, no town.

ANSWER: The Moxie store closed in February of this year and its contents were sold at auction during the Moxie Festival in July. The store was an iconic location in Lisbon and featured all things Moxie. You can still buy some Moxie memorabilia at other locations in and around town, however.

Millers’ Variety and Convenience Store at 689 Lisbon St. in Lisbon Falls carries Moxie T-shirts, and the Town Office in Lisbon sells Moxie merchandise. Of course, more merchandise will be available each year during the festival, so make your plans to attend. It’s a really great time.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Where can I buy gelato and what flavors does it come in? Thanks so much for all your help. — No name, Waterford.

ANSWER: Gelato, an Italian “ice-cream,” is generally richer and denser than traditional American ice-cream and contains less fat because it is made with less cream and generally does not contain egg yolk. In recent years, it has gained much popularity with the U.S. market, and that’s good news for fans of the dessert such as yourself.

Ice cream giant Breyer’s has a line of gelato products available in most local supermarkets. They offer a variety of flavors including: vanilla caramel, raspberry cheesecake, peanut butter chocolate, chocolate fudge truffle, tiramisu, chocolate caramel, salted caramel truffle, chocolate hazelnut, mint chocolate, strawberry truffle and cappuccino. Which flavors are available at which location varies.

There are other also other brands of gelato available at most local grocery stores, such as the Talenti brand, which, in addition to traditional flavors, offers more exotic choices for your palate such as banana chocolate swirl, Belgian milk chocolate, black raspberry chocolate chip, caramel apple pie, caramel cookie crunch, Caribbean coconut, and coconut almond chocolate — to name just a few.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: My name is Alex Cote, and I am a Life Scout in the Boy Scouts of America Troop 007. I am working on my Eagle Scout project. My benefactor for this project is the VFW Post 1603 in Auburn. The project I am working on is for Maine homeless veterans. I will be collecting different hygiene products and nonperishable items to provide 150 care packages at the VA Maine Homeless Veterans Stand Down in October.

I would like to ask if you can help me in this endeavor by donating general hygiene and nonperishable items, such as razors, shaving cream, bar soap, shampoo, conditioner, Chapstick, powder, under arm deodorant, Band-Aids, tissues, protein bar, granola bars and other snack items.

The items can be dropped off at the VFW Post 1603, 588 Minot Avenue, Auburn, on Thursdays from 4 to 8 p.m., Fridays 4 to 9 p.m., and Saturdays 2 to 6 p.m. or at the Oct. 7 spaghetti supper, in care of Alex Cote or Jennifer Lane. — Alex, Auburn.
