GRAY — Kyle Farrar led the way as Mountain Valley thwacked Gray-New Gloucester 63-6 in the season opener.

Farrar, a senior, ran for five touchdowns in Friday’s game, and helped the Falcons put the game away early. Mountain Valley led 21-6 after one quarter and 42-6 at halftime.

“Obviously, we were extremely happy with the way we played,” first-year Falcons coach Pat Mooney said.

“Last year, Gray-New Gloucester came here and we blew a three-touchdown lead in the last six minutes. That wasn’t going to happen again. We had this game circled.”

Nick Newman and Cameron Payne also scored touchdowns for Mountain Valley.

The Falcons’ defense forced three fumbles.

Windham 41, Lewiston 8

WINDHAM — A couple of key mistakes in the second quarter turned the tide against Lewiston on Friday in the team’s opening-night matchup against perennial power Windham.

The Eagles stuffed a pair of Lewiston drives for turnovers in the second quarter and jumped out to a 21-point lead at halftime en route to a 41-8 victory over the visiting Blue Devils.

“It was closer than the score indicated,” Lewiston coach Bruce Nicholas said. “It was almost 14-7 there in the second, and it probably should have been that at the half. We’re still making some mistakes that we need to get rid of.”

Windham, among the favorites in Class A North this season, instead led 21-0 at the half. Lewiston got some points back in the third quarter on a Roman Dennis run and subsequent two-point pass from Brock Belanger to Desmond Jackson.

But The Eagles tacked on 14 more in the third, and another six in the fourth to complete the scoring and hand Lewiston the loss.

“I think we’re closer to the middle, and we’ll have to prove ourselves in the next few weeks,” Nicholas said.

Wells 32, Spruce Mtn. 6

LIVERMORE FALLS — One of the top teams in Class C South, Wells took to the ground Friday and ran over Spruce Mountain in the team’s season opener, earning a 32-6 win at Griffin Field.

“It’s just inexperience at this point,” Spruce Mountain coach Walter Polky said. “They found out tonight what it’s like to play at a championship level. Wells is going to be one of the top teams this year, and our guys got to see how fast things are at this level.”

The Warriors led just 13-6 after the first quarter, but added 12 more points in the second and another score in the third to put plenty of distance between themselves and the Phoenix.

Dillon Webster had the lone touchdown for the home team, breaking the plane in the opening quarter to pull Spruce Mountain within a point at the time.
