LEWISTON — Xerox announced Thursday that it is closing a local call center and laying off 140 workers on Oct. 31.

Spokeswoman Coco Salazar said the contract that the facility has supported ends in October.

“We are giving our employees as much notice as possible, so they can make preparations,” she said. “We will provide job-search assistance as employees seek new jobs.”

Xerox has owned the call center in the Lewiston Mall, formerly known as ACS or Affiliated Computer Services, since 2009.

Employment has frequently yo-yoed at the company. In 2011, it announced plans to hire 200 more people. In 2012, it announced plans to cut 181.
