WEST PARIS — Town Manager Wade Rainey said a public hearing on the Soap Box Derby will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at the West Paris Town Office.

The hearing will give residents a chance to “share what they think worked this year, what didn’t work, and how to make the Soap Box Derby even better next year,” he said.

Derbies were held the weekends of Aug. 6 and 7, and Aug. 20 and 21, Rainey said.

During a previous board meeting, Selectman Dennis Henderson said the derbies were a popular event in the town as far back as the 1950s.

In January, resident Jose Pirela sought advice from the Board of Selectmen on how to revive them after a hiatus of several years.

Rainey said resident John Lemmon was responsible for spearheading the most recent Soap Box Derby.

The group that did the Soap Box Derby in the past stopped doing it, and for the last three or four years, no one had been doing it,” Rainey said. “John took an interest in the derby and ended up spearheading it this year.”
