I agree with Jean Smart (Aug. 23) that Paris has had several town managers in recent years. Some of them changed jobs frequently and were in Paris only briefly, earning a paycheck and experience, but with little commitment to or knowledge of the town.
Norway has had stability with David Holt at the helm, but even he had to start somewhere. His knowledge and abilities have expanded with experience. He also represents a town in which he lives, pays taxes and is answerable to friends, neighbors and family. He is totally familiar with his community.
Vic Hodgkins is, likewise, a lifelong resident of Paris, where he owns property, pays taxes and has proven his commitment to the town. I had the privilege of serving with him on the budget committee, which he chaired, and found him to be fair, knowledgeable and professional. He was then elected to serve the town of Paris as a selectman. His stability and commitment are borne out by the fact that he was with the same employer for 30 years.
Because I was a resident of Paris for more than 70 years, it is still “my town” at heart. So, as a new day dawns and a new administration begins, I wish to extend my best to the town and to the new manager.
