AUBURN — The Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport will start a 17,000-square-foot expansion and update, thanks to a federal grant from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program.
U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King announced Tuesday that the airport will receive $899,480 to help fund the expansion and rehabilitation of the terminal aircraft apron.
The project will allow more space for aircraft parking, particularly larger aircraft that occasionally visit the airport, as well as connect and refurbish the three separate terminals.
“Regional airports across Maine help to strengthen the economies of the surrounding communities and connect our state,” Collins and King said in a joint statement.
Airport Manager Rick Lanman said investment in airports is a good thing.
“They’re giving us almost $900,000,” he said. “It feels pretty great.”
“This investment for the Auburn-Lewiston airport will enhance the safety and efficiency of aviation activities and improve the experience for corporate, charter, cargo and recreational operations at the airport,” Collins and King said in the statement.
Cross Excavation of Bethel will oversee construction, which will begin after Labor Day. The project is expected to be finished within 45 days.
