AUBURN — Margery Ashton Cormier, 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 18, at her home at Schooner Estates, Auburn, surrounded by family and friends.
Marge, daughter of John and Selma Ashton, was born and lived her entire life in Lewiston. Marge is survived by her son, Stephen and his wife, Kathy, and their sons, Benjamin and Alexander, of Swampscott, Mass.; as well as many nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly.
Marge was predeceased by her beloved husband, Clement; as well as her seven siblings, Elinor, Stanley, Ruth, Dorothy, John Jr., Luena and Donald.
Marge had many blissful and adventurous years of marriage, and she and Clem greatly enjoyed their retirement. They played golf, loved spending time with their grandchildren, and traveled the world together. They were original members of Fairlawn Golf Course, where Marge could be found 4 days a week in the summer and she continued to enjoy golf into her 80s. There were memorable trips to Europe, China, Russia, Australia and the Holy Lands. Their joy of life was evident to all who knew them. Marge was also an independent person who enjoyed bowling, painting, playing cards, going to the theater, and the companionship with her many friends and family members.
Marge will be remembered for doing the alley cat with her beloved sisters, Luena and Dorothy. She loved spending time with her son, Steve and his family and they made many happy memories together. “Nana” could usually beat her grandsons on the golf course, and sometimes at the bowling alley. Marge was the prime organizer of the annual family reunion at Reid State Park — always the best day of the year.
Marge was a very spiritual person and her faith in God was a cornerstone of her life. She was very active at both Trinity and St. Michael’s Episcopalian churches. Marge was a very progressive and modern woman and an avid volunteer for many causes including the Hospice House, the YWCA and CMMC.
Though born and raised as a child of the Depression, and the daughter of Lewiston Police Chief John Ashton, Marge always had a modern and optimistic view of the world. She read the newspaper cover to cover every day and was up to date on current events. Whether politics, religion, or family values, Marge lived in the present and always looked at the world as a loving Christian person. She was always happy to help a person in need; Marge was one of a kind and a force of nature.
Marge lived independently in her own home until 2014 when she moved to Schooner Estates in Auburn. Marge’s family would like extend thanks to the folks at Schooner for their terrific care, and moreover, to Marge’s nieces who loved and cared for her through her final days.
