JAY — The North Jay Post Office on East Dixfield Road will close its doors Aug. 30.

The contract postal unit hosts post office box services for 36 customers, according to Stephen Doherty, a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service in the Greater Boston and Northern New England districts.

Postal retail services have not been offered at the unit since a forced-entry burglary occurred in April at the Hairitage House, a hair salon. The two share space behind the counter but have separate entries.

Destroyed in the incident was a safe that belonged to Marilyn Morse of Jay, who owns the Hairitage House, the building and manages the postal unit. A small amount of cash was stolen, according to Jay police Detective Mike Mejia.

The burglary has not been solved. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service has offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual who burglarized the office.

Morse has put the building up for sale. She plans to continue her barbering service until the building sells, she said.

Postal customers were given the option of receiving street delivery or picking up their mail at the Jay Post Office about 4 miles away, Doherty said Wednesday.

As of Wednesday, 28 customers had opted to pick up their mail in Jay, he said.

The postal contract would not transfer with the sale of the building.
