RANGELEY — A former Carrabassett Valley selectman is accused of driving drunk on Tuesday.

Stephen E. Pierce, 65, of Carrabassett Valley was arrested on a felony charge of operating under the influence, two priors, and a misdemeanor charge of operating without a license, according to Sgt. Kevin Hartley’s report, Sheriff Scott Nichols Sr. said Wednesday.

Pierce is an elected trustee of the Carrabassett Valley Sanitary District.

A caller reported a green Toyota Tundra driving all over the road on Route 4 at about 1 p.m. Tuesday in Sandy River Plantation, he said.

Chief Deputy Steven Lowell found the vehicle on Route 4 in Rangeley and stopped it at about 2:35 p.m., Nichols said.

Lowell took Pierce into custody before Hartley, who was in the area, arrived. A field sobriety test was conducted.

Pierce was arrested and Hartley took him to the Franklin County jail in Farmington.

He was released Wednesday morning on $350 cash bail, according to a corrections officer. 

Pierce is scheduled to appear on Aug. 23 at a Farmington court.

Pierce’s term as a trustee of the Sanitary District expires in 2018, according to the town of Carrabassett Valley’s website.

The district is a quasi-municipal entity separate from the town. The trustees are elected by voters.

Pierce was arrested on an OUI charge in Portland in 2011 while he was a selectman and a trustee of the sanitary district.

In a separate incident, he was convicted in 2012 by a Farmington court for operating under the influence with one prior conviction, according to Sun Journal archives. His sentence was 12 days in jail, a $700 fine and his driver’s license was suspended for three years.

Attempts to reach Pierce were unsuccessful.
