The state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says more than 45,000 “any deer” permits are proposed for 18 of Maine’s 29 wildlife management districts.

State wildlife biologist Kyle Ravana says the moderate winter allowed for the increase in hunting permits. Harsh winters in previous years have culled the deer herd.

Hunters who lack an “any deer” permit are only allowed to shoot deer that have antlers. Biologists say the system allows the state to manage the deer population.

Online applications are due by the end of the day on Aug. 15 and paper applications must be submitted in person or by mail no later than 5 p.m. July 29.
