AUGUSTA (AP) — Police say that three cows escaped their Hallowell enclosure, wandered onto Interstate 95 and crossed into Augusta before being safely corralled from the highway.

Police told The Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/29OSMwX ) the cattle weren’t harmed and didn’t cause any traffic accidents on Sunday.

Sgt. Eric Lloyd says the cows were located in the northbound side of the highway on the exit ramp to U.S. Route 202.

Lloyd says six officers formed a semi-circle around the cows and guided them toward a vegetated area.

Police contacted the animals’ owners, who came and retrieved the cattle. Police say the owners don’t face charges.
