1955 – 2016

AUBURN — Michael Leslie Cottle, 61, died Tuesday, May 24, at his residence on Hampshire Street, after dealing for some years with complications of diabetes.

Born Feb. 9, 1955, in El Paso, Texas, he was a son of Frank Elliott and Patricia Ann (Durgin) Cottle Jr. He grew up in Auburn, moving here following the death of his father, a staff sergeant, who was one of five U.S. Air Force airmen killed in the 1957 crash of a C-124 Globemaster.

Following graduation from Edward Little High School, Michael’s life revolved around automobiles. Through the years, he worked as a mechanic at First National Tire, Discount Auto and Randy’s. He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed the drag racing at Oxford.

For many years, as a member of the Shriners, he drove a mini-racer in parades around the state and, when illness prevented him from driving, supplied crew support for other drivers.

Michael was a steady, dependable worker, an easygoing, well-mannered gentleman who wouldn’t say a bad word about anybody. His former wife, Lisa Green, who passed away earlier this spring, expressed a desire to see Michael once again.

He is survived by his son, Frank Elliott Cottle III of Lewiston; and four grandchildren, Christian, Myia, Sebastian and Troy; his brother, Richard D. Cottle and his wife, Eva, of Jay; his aunt, Ruth Cottle Putney of Portland; a niece and several cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents and nephew.
