PORTLAND (AP) — Maine police say a study of fatal motorcycle crashes in the state last year showed that most happened during the day and involved speed or alcohol.

Maine State Police put together a study group to review the 32 motorcycle deaths that happened in the state in 2015. The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles, a group member, found that 74 percent of the crashes happened during daylight and 73 percent involved excessive speed.

The bureau also found alcohol use was confirmed or suspected in 74 percent of the crashes. The operator was not wearing a helmet in 74 percent. A little less than half of the crashes did not involve other vehicles.

Police say there have been six motorcycle deaths in Maine this year compared to ten at this time in 2015.
