DEAR SUN SPOTS: What does O. J. in O.J. Simpson’s name stand for? Thank you. — No Name, Waterford.

ANSWER:

, who was born Orenthal James Simpson, played football in college for the USC Trojans (where he won the Heisman Trophy in 1968), and later in the NFL as a running back for the Buffalo Bills and then for the San Francisco 49ers, where he holds the record for yards rushed in a single season. But, while he may be famous for his pro-athletic career, he is infamous for his alleged role in the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Brown. He was acquitted of their murders in 1994, but has had run-ins with the law on several occasions since for various other crimes. He is currently in prison.

While O. J. played football, his teammates nicknamed him “The Juice” based on his initials’ similarity to the abbreviated term often used when referring to orange juice.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Liberty Festival is in need of volunteers. The Liberty Festival is Lewiston-Auburn’s annual Fourth of July celebration and will take place on Monday, July 4, 2016. We are planning many more things throughout the weekend for this year’s festival. The festival will again have a great line-up of stage performances, food and merchandise vendors to keep visitors busy throughout the event.

Volunteer positions are available throughout the weekend for everything from set-up to take-down, including information booth, food booth help and parking lot attendants. Additionally, the festival still has booth and display space available for local vendors. Watch for more info soon and check our website or Facebook page for updates.
