PORTLAND — Republican Gov. Paul LePage is again blaming asylum seekers for bringing infectious disease into Maine – but he hasn’t released data proving it.

The Portland Press Herald reports that state data shows seven tuberculosis cases in the first quarter of 2016, compared with a median of five cases for the same period during the previous five years.

There were 12 acute hepatitis B cases and 11 acute hepatitis C cases that quarter, compared with a median of four cases during that period over the previous five years.

But the data has no ethnic, racial or geographic breakdown.

LePage made the comments during a Wednesday town hall in Augusta. The Department of Health and Human Services hasn’t responded to repeated media requests for comment.
