FARMINGTON — Franklin Memorial Hospital Auxiliary President Dawn Girardin presented hospital Chief Financial Officer Wayne Bennett with a $19,000 donation at its annual meeting on June 1.

The money will go toward the purchase of a new dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, which uses low-dose radiation to measure bone density.

Bennett introduced Tammy Frost of the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center, one of just 41 imaging technologists registered in bone densitometry in Maine.

“The problem with osteoporosis is that it does not cause symptoms and often goes undetected until one has a fragility fracture. This is the main reason why a DXA machine in this community is so greatly needed for our patients,” Frost explained.

A radiologist always interprets the images and sends a signed report to the referring physician who decides if treatment or other steps are necessary to improve bone density.

In other news, Assistant Treasurer Shannon Smith announced the next fundraiser is the uniform and shoe sale on July 14.

Caroleen Caldwell, chair of the Scholarship Committee, announced the seven recipients of the Auxiliary’s West Central Maine Health Careers Scholarship Program. The following nursing students will be awarded $600 scholarships: Althea Mae Drummond of Livermore Falls; Shawnee Mae Ellis of New Vineyard; Amanda Cote of Strong; Lauren Farrington of Jay; Jennifer Nichols of Jay; Cassidy Mosher of Temple; and Randi Duguay of Jay.

Jill Gray, staff liaison to the Auxiliary, installed the following officers for the coming year: Jean Rand, president; Shannon Smith, first vice president; Kamilla Hall, second vice president; Les Gatchell, secretary; Priscilla Smith, treasurer; and Shannon Smith, assistant treasurer.
