PERU — The Dirigo High School Class of 2016 had a brief trial run for its June 10 graduation Wednesday at Dirigo Elementary School, where they marched through its hallways while Dirigo Elementary school students cheered them on.
Charlie Swan, principal of Dirigo Elementary School, said he heard about elementary schools and middle schools inviting graduating high school classes to march through their hallways ahead of graduation.
“I’m not sure if it was in Maine or out of state, but there were some Facebook posts about high school seniors marching through the halls of elementary schools while the students watched and applauded them,” Swan said.
The tradition was picked up by Livermore and Jay elementary schools, and Hartford/Sumner Elementary School, Swan said.
“As soon as I heard about it, I was thinking, ‘How have we not done this before?’” Swan said, laughing. “We’ll definitely be doing this again.”
Pupils lined up along the walls of the Dirigo Elementary School hallways, with some holding handcrafted signs offering congratulations.
At 12:45 p.m., the Class of 2016, led by Noah Brown and Gina Kubesh, began walking down the hallways, while Swan read off the names of the seniors over the intercom.
