LEWISTON — City Clerk Kathy Montejo is worried about the June 14 election because of the low number of requests for absentee ballots.

“I’m just so afraid people will forget about it because of the timing of it,” she said. “The weather’s nice. School’s winding down. I don’t want it to fall through the cracks.”

When the city clerk’s staff checked the online requests for absentee ballots Tuesday morning, they were surprised.

“We only had one,” Montejo said.

So far, there have been 165 requests.

Considering what’s on the ballot — the school budget for a second time, the new elementary school, and elected offices for both Republicans and Democrats — Montejo considers the number of requests to be low.

Voters can get an absentee ballot by calling 513-3124, ordering one online at www.ci.lewiston.me.us/voter, or visiting the clerk’s office on the second floor of City Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and filling one out in person or mailing it back by June 14.

Lewiston has more than 25,000 registered voters. Turnout for the school budget budget May 10 was 2.8 percent. The budget failed to pass by six votes, prompting a second vote.
