ANSWER: Long before there were words in film, there was music (silent movies were never really silent). When it’s done right, music should enhance the overall viewing experience rather than detract from it. The best placed music will add to the mood of the show and you likely won’t even notice it’s there.
There are multiple factors that can contribute to a bad sound experience, from the show’s audio team to your television set. Unfortunately, there is little you can do about most of those factors except to keep the remote control nearby. Some smart TVs have automatic sound adjustment built into them, but even where you sit in a room compared to where your sound system speakers are can impact how you hear a particular show.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m a very finicky TV watcher, with only four regular shows that I watch and two of them are no longer available, “North Woods Law” and “The Incredible Dr. Pol.” Would you have any idea what happened to these two family-viewing shows? Sun Spots is a valuable part of the Sun Journal. Thank you. — Karen, Livermore Falls.
ANSWER: “The Incredible Dr. Pol” is a reality television show on Nat Geo Wild that follows Dr. Jan Pol’s veterinary clinic, which specializes in farm animals. It’s one of the channel’s most popular animal shows and is currently in its eighth season. From time to time, these shows do take breaks from the air so the station can introduce new programming or simply so the stars of the reality shows can have a bit of a break from 24/7 cameras. Sun Spots recommends you keep an eye on the Sun Journal’s TV Preview for local upcoming show times. The show has not been canceled as of this date.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for “North Woods Law.” Its last season will premiere on Animal Planet during the first week of June. In 2015, Animal Planet announced that the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife had decided to not enter into another contract for future seasons of the show. So enjoy it while you can and maybe consider setting your DVR to record what shows you are able while they run.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Friends of the Lisbon Library will hold an “In the Bag Book and Bake Sale” on Saturday, June 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the library’s Bookworm Bend Garden. In case of inclement weather, the book sale will be held in the Program Room on the lower level of the library. Help the Friends with its spring cleaning now and look for the Annual Moxie Days Book Sale on July 8 and 9.
Volunteers are needed. Anyone willing to give an hour or two of their time to help the library on the day of the sale should stop by the library, call 353-6564 or email lisbonlibraryfriends@gmail.com. — Sally, Lisbon.
