MEXICO — Police Chief Roy Hodsdon will meet with the Planning Board on Thursday, May 26 to discuss the possibility of drafting a medical marijuana dispensary ordinance.

Hodsdon said that he thought it was important to bring the issue to the board after a medical marijuana dispensary, managed by John Zenonos, was approved on Canal Street in Rumford.

Some businesses adjacent to the dispensary, including Barks and Bubbles Pet Grooming and the Greater Rumford Community Center, have said that the smell of marijuana has infiltrated the space around their buildings.

Hodsdon said it wasn’t his intention to “make it so people cannot get their medical marijuana.”

“The whole point of the ordinance is to ensure the safety of our children and our residents, and make sure medical marijuana dispensaries have specific guidelines to follow,” Hodsdon said.

He said he has been looking at ordinances from other towns.

“Ultimately, even if we draft something, it will be up to the people to vote on it,” Hodsdon said. “The meeting is our first step in getting something ready.”
