PORTLAND — New estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show that the population of Maine has remained stagnant, with some growth in the southern suburbs.

The annual American Community Survey shows that the state’s estimated population was 1,329,328 in July 2015.

That’s a year-over-year decline of 928 people, but 967 more people than Maine had in 2010.

Cumberland County accounted for eight out of 10 communities with populations that grew the most. Windham added the most, with a population increase of 4.8 percent from 2010 to 2015, bringing the total to 17,816.

Cities in central and northern Maine had mostly declining populations. Augusta lost 665 people over five years— bringing the population down to 18,471. The survey says that’s more than any other city in Maine.
