MEXICO — The River Valley Recreation Center plans to refurbish the gym floor and replace the wooden bleachers, Activity Director Justeen LaPointe said.
O’Sullivan’s Flooring Co. of Massachusetts “gave us a good deal,” she said. “They’re going to be coming soon to sand down the gym floor, and in order to do that, we had to take out the bleachers that were attached to the walls.”
The wooden bleachers, which have been in the gym since the building was known as Mexico High School, were heavy and screwed into the walls so there were “some huge holes left in the walls where the bleachers were attached. We’ve been patching up the holes and painting the walls,” she said. “We’re just trying to get everything ready before the gym floor is worked on.”
She said O’Sullivan’s representatives said they would do the work quickly so it would not interfere with birthday parties and roller-skating nights.
LaPointe said she and Wayne Sevigny, recreation center director, took some photographs of the bleachers and posted them online to see if anyone wanted them.
“There was some thought about maybe saving a couple of the bleachers, but they’re extremely heavy and impossible to move,” LaPointe added.
She said the next step is to find new replacements.
“Right now, we’re looking at different seating options,” LaPointe said. “The problem with the bleachers was they took up a lot of space on the gym floor. Right now, we have some more room for activities.”
