FARMINGTON — The Franklin County budget for 2016-17 stands at $6 million after the county budget panel tentatively cut a total of $213,993 from county and jail expenditures May 12.

Of that amount, $212,086 was cut from the $4.38 million county budget and $1,907 from the jail budget of $1.89 million. The proposals do not factor in an overall $791,104 in anticipated revenue.

The Budget Advisory Committee will hold a public hearing on the proposed spending package at 5:30 p.m. June 16 in the Superior Court at the county courthouse.

The budget panel eliminated $1,907 to give nonunion employees a 2 percent cost-of-living raise. That tentatively reduced $25,585 from the county expenditures, factoring in wages, retirement, FICA and workers’ compensation costs, Deputy Clerk/Deputy Treasurer Vickie Braley said.

The tentative reductions leave the proposed spending plan for the county, excluding the jail, $162,915 below the state-mandated tax cap, Braley said.

Prior to the Budget Advisory Committee tackling the proposals, the county was nearly $100,000 over the state-mandated tax cap.

The jail budget is $41,707 over the tax cap, Braley said. It is anticipated that the county will get additional state money for the jail to offset that amount.
