PORTLAND (AP) — The National Trust for Historic Preservation is giving a small grant toward the preservation of Portland’s Fort Gorges.
The trust has awarded Friends of Fort Gorges $5,000 to fund a plan to preserve the Civil War-era fort. Friends of Fort Gorges is a group that is working on the restoration and preservation of the fort.
The fort is located on a small island in Casco Bay and was identified for hazard mitigation work by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about 20 years ago.
City officials have said they want to eventually make the fort accessible to the public. Portland took ownership of the fort in the 1950s.
