The Pictsweet Co. has announced a voluntary recall of certain frozen vegetable products because of possible contamination of Listeria bacteria, according to the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry.

CRF Frozen Foods, a Pictsweet ingredient supplier, initiated a recall May 5 on all lots of green beans and green peas because of the potential risk of Listeria contamination.

Listeria can cause mild to severe illness in persons who consume contaminated food. Those at high risk are newborn infants, the elderly, and anyone with weakened immune systems.

The affected Pictsweet items were distributed nationwide through retail stores. Products being recalled include “best if used by” dates on a table posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website, www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm499946.htm and the letter “K” as the fifth digit of the manufacturing code. This information is printed on the back panel of each package.

Only Pictsweet products that contain green beans or green peas are being recalled. Recalled items should be discarded or returned to the store where it was purchased for a full refund.
