PRESQUE ISLE (AP) — The state Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that wounded a 29-year-old suspect in northeast Maine.
Presque Island police say Officer Lucas Hafford shot 29-year-old Derek Sam in a parking lot Saturday evening after Sam approached him with a knife.
Hafford responded around 5:54 p.m. to reports that a man who appeared to be bleeding was acting suspiciously near a McDonald’s restaurant on Main Street.
Police say Hafford encountered Sam in the parking lot and ordered him to put down the knife. After Sam allegedly refused to comply, Hafford used a stun gun on him but the device failed.
Police say Hafford shot Sam after he “aggressively” advanced following further commands to drop the weapon. Sam was hospitalized in unknown condition.
