GRAY — School Administrative District 15 voters will go to the polls June 14 to vote on a $6.9 million bond to renovate school buildings and athletic fields.

It’s the second time Gray and New Gloucester residents will be presented with the proposal. In November 2014, they rejected a $6.62 million bond and $737,000 for artificial turf for athletic fields.

Superintendent Bruce Beasley said at a news conference Thursday that this time there will be two questions: One for buildings and one for athletic facilities.

Question 1 asks voters to approve:

• $3.1 million to add six classrooms at Gray-New Gloucester Middle School in Gray, including work on the entrance, roof and parking;

• upgrades to Gray-New Gloucester High School’s chemistry labs;

• more parking at Memorial School in New Gloucester; and

• playground improvements at Dunn School in New Gloucester.

Question 2 asks voters to approve $3.85 million for a new eight-lane track, more practice space and relocation of the high school baseball and softball fields. The playing fields will be sod, not artificial turf.

“In the past, community members have graciously donated time, energy and resources to keep up with growing programs of the district and the community,” Beasley said. “An increase in the number of school teams and community programs has created a demand that is placing a strain on existing fields.”

Informational pamphlets on the bond package will be available at key locations in both communities next week.

A public hearing on the bond questions is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at Gray-New Gloucester High School cafetorium. Information on the bond’s impact to each town will be available. It will also be included in a mailing to each household on the proposed 2016-17 school budget during the week of May 10.

The school budget meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, May 26, at the Gray-New Gloucester High School cafetorium. A budget validation vote is scheduled June 14 at polling stations in each town.

The Capital Improvement Committee charged with reviewing documents from a previous bond also conducted a needs assessment that was given to the school board, Beasley said. Members of the committee include Chairman Dan Cobb, Vice Chairwoman Melanie Craig, Michael Smith, Angus McDuffie, Katherine Damon, Steve Piela, Carl Wilcox, Andrea Harvey, Peter Pinkerton, Michelle Carson, Tim Anketell and Neil Carroll.
