RUMFORD — The Police Department has received a grant of $1,575 from the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety to patrol for speeders from now until Sept. 15.

The grant is awarded based on crash-related data. The goal is to reduce the number of crashes that occur because of speeding.

“We can reduce the number of injuries and fatalities by driving within the speed limit, wearing safety belts and not driving aggressively or while distracted,” Rumford Police Chief Stacy Carter said.

He indicated that over the next two weeks, Rumford will also use a speed trailer, donated by the Maine Department of Transportation. The trailer will be set up in areas where police receive complaints of drivers going too fast, he said.

“The trailer has the capability to record speeds so that we can utilize the data to target those problem areas,” Carter said.
