CHESTERVILLE — About 75 firefighters from nine departments and the Maine Forest Service worked into the night Wednesday to put out a woods fire that burned about 4 acres off Borough Road, Assistant Chief Conley Gould III said Thursday.

A forest ranger in a Maine Forest Service helicopter spotted the fire and reported it at 4:27 p.m. The fire, which was all on the surface and not underground, was half a mile in the woods from Borough Road.

“We trucked water to the scene, and we trucked water into the woods,” Gould said.

Firefighters used Indian tanks and hand tools to extinguish the fire, and the helicopter dropped water on it, he said.

Firefighters cleared the area at about 8 p.m. and some returned Thursday to make sure it was completely out.

The Maine Forest Service is investigating the cause and origin.

Fire departments involved were Chesterville, Farmington, Fayette, Jay, Industry, Mount Vernon, New Sharon, Vienna and Wilton.
