1939 – 2016
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Ragna E. Gauger went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 11. Ragna passed away peacefully at her home in Fort Myers, Fla., from complications of Parkinson’s disease.
The only child of the late Proctor and Frances Byard, Ragna was born on Nov. 18, 1939, in Blue Hill. She attended public schools in Blue Hill and went on to graduate top in her class as a registered nurse from the Eastern Maine General Hospital in Bangor in 1960. That September, she married Charles (Chuck) Gauger who was enrolled in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University. She worked as a nurse at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Mich., until Chuck’s graduation in 1963.
In 1964, the Gaugers and their two sons, Todd and Mark, moved to Norway, where Chuck and Ragna resided for the next 40 years. In Norway, Ragna was active in church and civic affairs.
In 1993, Ragna graduated from the New England College of Acupuncture after completing their three-year master’s degree program. She simultaneously received her Bachelor of Science degree in professional arts from Saint Joseph’s College in Standish.
She had a private acupuncture practice in South Paris for 10 years. In 2001, she and Chuck retired and moved to Fort Myers, Fla., to spend winters as they maintained a summer home in Topsham. In the ensuing years, they were fortunate to travel extensively as well as enjoy sailing, tennis and golf.
Ragna is survived by her husband, Chuck; son, Todd and his wife, Kristen; son, Mark and his wife, Chris; and three grandchildren, Vanessa Gauger, Derek Gauger and Megan Gauger.
