A 14-year-old boy from Auburn is charged with attempted murder for attacking a neighbor with a hammer, apparently at random, Deputy Police Chief Jason Moen said in a news release Wednesday.

The victim remained in satisfactory condition after undergoing surgery, Moen said.

It was one of two unrelated hammer attacks in the Twin Cities on Tuesday, police said. Neither the victims nor the suspects have been identified.

Auburn police were called to a home on Huard Avenue at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for a report of an assault, Moen said. While the 56-year-old the victim was taken to Central Maine Medical Center, police identified the 14-year-old neighbor, whom investigators say has a history of violent outbursts, as the suspect.

Moen said that while the two knew each other, it appeared to be a random attack.

The teen was taken into custody and charged with elevated aggravated assault and attempted murder. He was being held Wednesday at the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland.

In Lewiston, Sgt. Roger Landry said police went to 242 Park St. at 4:44 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a man with a head wound.

“The female hit him several times in the head with a hammer after a small argument,” Landry said.

Crystal Foss, 33, was charged with aggravated assault and domestic violence assault, he said.

Landry didn’t believe the injuries were too severe.

“The officer wrote in the report that the wounds were hard to see amongst his long, matted hair,” he said. “He was bleeding; there was blood down the stairs.”

Police are investigating both incidents.
