BANGOR — Gov. Paul LePage’s nominee to the Maine Board of Environmental Protection has narrowly won committee approval.

Kathleen Chase, a former Republican representative from Wells, received a 6-5 endorsement this week. The vote was largely along party lines.

The Natural Resources Council of Maine opposed Chase’s nomination, saying she previously sponsored a bill that would’ve exempted all wetlands from shoreline zoning protections. The Maine Public Broadcasting Network reports that Pete Didisheim told the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources that no nominee for the BEP in the past 20 years has had “such an adversarial stance toward Maine’s environmental laws.”

The seven-member Board of Environmental Protection is responsible for interpreting and enforcing Maine environmental policies. The Chase nomination now goes to the Senate for consideration.
