WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service on Tuesday reminded taxpayers they can quickly check the status of their tax return and refund through the “Where’s My Refund?” feature at IRS.gov.

Initial information will normally be available within 24 hours after the IRS receives the taxpayer’s e-filed return or four weeks after the taxpayer mails a paper return to the IRS. The system updates only once every 24 hours, usually overnight, so there’s no need to check more often.

Users need to put in their Social Security number, filing status and the exact refund amount expected and shown on their income tax form.

Those without Internet access can use the tool by calling 1-800-829-1954, 24 hours a day. Those with the Internet can go directly to the refund feature at https://www.irs.gov/Refunds.

So far, taxpayers have used Where’s My Refund? more than 231 million times this year, an increase of nearly 35 percent over last year at this time, according to the IRS.
