FARMINGTON — Two men received summonses for an unpermitted burn on Dunham Road on Saturday, officials said.

Police and firefighters arrived around 9:21 p.m. after receiving a report of heavy smoke. They found a burning tire, couch and mattress and flames reaching 25 to 30 feet in the air.

Charles Greenough, 32, of Farmington and Michael Purington, 30, of Jay took responsibility for the fire, Farmington Police Secretary Bonnie Pomeroy read from Sgt. Michael Adcock’s police report.

A birthday party was being held at Greenough’s residence and about 15 people were present, she said. The men told police they did not know those items could not be burned.

Members of Farmington Fire and Rescue extinguished the fire without any issues, Capt. Tim “T.D.” Hardy said Monday.

According to the department’s website, “it is illegal to burn without a permit in the state of Maine.” Any person who burns outside and does not follow stated permit conditions or restrictions commits a misdemeanor.
