BRUNSWICK — Two Odyssey of the Mind teams from Edward Little High School and one from Auburn Middle School finished in first place at the recent regional competition in Brunswick.
The teams will compete at the state tournament in Biddeford on Saturday, April 2.
Teams competed in the Something Fishy problem, where they needed to design and operate a technical solution that simulates multiple styles of fishing. In this, a fisher works from a designated area to “catch” three different objects that are outside of that area. The catch is on the move and includes something expected, something unexpected and a new discovery. The performance also includes a change of weather and a humorous character that portrays a potential catch and avoids being caught by the fisher.
The second Edward Little team competed in the Fins, Fur, Feathers & Friends problem. In this problem, the team needs to create and present a humorous performance depicting problem-solving from the perspective of three different animals. The animals will help a stranger, help each other and solve a problem that threatens the survival of all animals. During the performance, the animals sing and dance. They also show curiosity, sympathy, frustration and joy.
All problems must be completed during competition in eight minutes, including setup time. All teams also competed in the spontaneous problem.
Edward Little students competing in the Something Fishy problem were Katelyn Breton, Maureen Brann, Evy Bilodeau, Bailey Bryant, Kayla Fuller and Hope Williams, coached by John Guy and Laura Brann; Auburn Middle School students competing in the same problem were Sophia Carson, Tristan Brezovsky, Liz Willette, Thomas Brann, Alex Avila and Emily Farrington, coached by Jim Rowe and Diana Carson.
Edward Little students competing in the Fins, Fur, Feathers & Friends problem were Jillian Foster, Isabella Peinado, Jaeda Beinavis, Seth Webster, Abigail Field and Jeremy Carter, coached by Caroline and Matthew Peinado.
