RUMFORD — The Rumford Eagles Auxiliary will host its 10th All Male Beauty Pageant next month when local men will dress in women’s casual and evening wear for charity.
Past President Marcia Surette said eight men have committed to participating, and she’s waiting to hear from four to six others.
Doors will open at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the Eagles Hall at 13 Oxford Ave., followed by the show at 6:30 p.m.. Tickets are $5.
Surette said contestants will compete in casual wear, evening gowns and talent.
“For the talent portion, most of them lip-sync to different songs,” she said. “My husband is doing ‘Heartbreaker’ by Pat Benatar, and we always try to get somebody to sing Shania Twain’s ‘Man, I Feel Like A Woman.’”
The contestants will walk up and down a catwalk with a purse, collecting donations.
“Whoever gets the most donations will win the pageant,” Surette said. “Each man competing gets to choose which organization their money goes toward.”
The idea for an all-male beauty pageant began in 2005, according to Surette, at the suggestion of auxiliary members Mary McDonald and Steph Wilson.
Although the auxiliary took a year off from the pageant last year, Surette said she’s aiming to make the 10th edition the “biggest one yet.”
“This year, we have our youngest contestant ever participating, at 14 years old,” she said. “We have some new participants, and some repeat performers. We try to make sure the charities the money goes to are as local as possible. Also, we’ll have people on hand at the event to make change. We’ll take anything: $5, $10 or $20 bills. It’s all good to us.”
Surette said, “You don’t need to be a member of the club to participate; you just have to be willing to dress like a woman.”
