FARMINGTON — Girl Scouts ranging from kindergarten to high school attended the annual World Thinking Day on Feb. 21. This year’s theme was “Connect.” This is a way for girls to see and experience different aspects of the world through Girl Scouting.

There were seven troops displaying countries and another troop participating in creating SWAPS. Each troop picked a country that joins in with Girl Scouts throughout the world. The countries that area troops picked were Iceland, Russia, Bahama, Peru, Brazil, India, Zimbabwe, South Africa and the United Kingdom. The troops had to create a display of facts, create a flag, display what it was like in the day of a girl in their country, a SWAP, and create a food dish/drink of their choosing for samples.

The day started with a parade of international flags. Each troop was able to go around the world, and this year they went by “air.” They went to each boarding station to tour that part of the world. At each station, their passports were stamped for each country they visited, and they learned different facts about the country by applying the facts to a scavenger hunt, eating a sample of food and getting a SWAP. The food included Naan bread, Brazilian lemonade and Russian tea cake.

After troops went to each station, there were opportunities for every troop to present. One troop did Yoga, another dodgeball, another a parade of different music instruments and masks and two others fun ways of presenting facts of their countries.

Sandy River Service Unit covers areas from Fayette, Jay, Livermore, Livermore Falls, Wilton, Farmington and neighboring towns, Rangeley, Strong, Phillips and Kingfield.
