BETHEL — As part of a nationwide effort to curb tobacco use by children, students from a private school in Newry will speaking to fourth-graders at Crescent Park Elementary School at 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 16, about the dangers of smoking.
Students from The Eddy School are one of more than 1,000 groups of children across the country participating in Kick Butts Day.
According to Matthew L. Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, Kick Butts Day urges students to stand up to the tobacco industry, and to encourage elected officials to help reduce youth tobacco use.
“Elected officials in every state should help reach that goal by supporting proven strategies to prevent youth tobacco use, including higher tobacco taxes, strong smoke-free laws, prevention programs and raising the tobacco age to 21,” Myers added.
The groups will focus on the marketing tactics that tobacco companies use to target youth.
