AUGUSTA — Maine’s unemployment rate fell slightly from December to January and is at its lowest point since 2001.

The state’s Department of Labor says the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell from 4 percent to 3.8 percent. It was 4.9 percent a year ago.

The Labor Department also says the number of unemployed people fell 7,900 over the past year to 25,700. Maine’s unemployment rate is less than the national rate of 4.9 percent, which is also down from a year ago.

New England’s unemployment rate for the month was 4.6 percent. The lowest rate in the region was in New Hampshire, where it was 2.9 percent. The highest rate was in Connecticut at 5.5 percent.
