STANDISH — There will be an upcoming lifeguard training course hosted by the Harold Alfond Center at St. Joseph’s College.
The course will combine on-site and online teaching methods to train lifeguards skills they need to prevent injuries and how to prepare for and respond to incidences of drowning, injury and breathing and cardiac emergencies.
The course is April 15, 16 and 17.
The 28-hour program will train participants in the newly released lifeguard program, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid. Qualifying participants will receive American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR certifications, valid for two years.
As a blended learning course, training combines online learning with on-site skills sessions where participants practice skills and demonstrate competency. The initial online lessons must be completed at least two days before the first on-site session.
To enroll in the course, participants must:
• Be at least 15 years old by the end of class;
• Be able to swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing;
• Be able to tread water for two minutes using only the legs; and
• Be able to complete a 20-yard back-and-forth swim with surface dive to retrieve a 10-pound object from a depth of seven to 10 feet in less than one minute and 40 seconds.
Participants must attend all three days of classes. The April 15 class runs from 4 to 9 p.m.; the April 16 and 17 classes are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Registration for the course costs $335 and includes Red Cross fees.
