ROXBURY — Voters at Monday evening’s annual town meeting approved more than $6,000 for 15 of 16 requests from organizations.
The request that was rejected was $369 for the River Valley Growth Council.
One person asked what the council had done for the town.
Selectman Tim Derouche said he couldn’t think of anything, but “the stuff they’re bringing to Rumford would provide the opportunity for jobs.”
Voters overwhelmingly defeated the article.
The Roxbury ATV Riders requested $1,000, but selectmen recommended raising and appropriating $738, which is the equivalent of $2 per resident, Derouche said.
Club President Michael Worthley said the money from the town pays for extra signs and other things state grants don’t cover.
Residents approved $738 for the club.
Safe Voices, which supports and empowers those affected by domestic violence in Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin counties, also requested $1,000. Selectmen recommended $738, which voters approved.
“They served 1,741 men and women in Maine last year and 401 people in Oxford County,” Police Chief Roy Hodsdon said.
One resident commended the organization but said abusers should be brought to court and fined to fund Safe Voices and similar organizations.
“I agree with you, and it’s something I can bring before the board to see what they think,” Hodsdon said.
