PORTLAND — The Mercy Hospital president and CEO who oversaw the opening of a state-of-the-art hospital and assisted in a merger with Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems is leaving the post.

Officials said Monday that Eileen Skinner has resigned effective March 31.

M. Michelle Hood, president and CEO of Brewer-based Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, praised her dedication to the Mercy mission and wished her well.

Skinner took over the post in 2002 and soon after planning began for a new campus and hospital that opened in 2008. She also oversaw a partnership with EMHS in 2012 after failing to reach an agreement to sell Mercy to Boston-based Steward Health Care.

With the merger complete, she’s ready to move on but agreed to stay through month’s end to finalize a new strategic plan.
