WALES — The Oak Hill Raiders used their depth in a 54-42 win over the Carrabec Cobras in a Northern Maine Unified basketball preliminary round game on Friday.

The No. 4 Raiders (7-1) were led by Devon Fournier, who had 18 points. Josh Leavitt and Lee Mower each had 12 points. Secondary scoring came from Sam Guilford and Angie James, who each had six points in the victory.

The Cobras (2-5) were led by Kaitlin Tatukis, who had 18 points and kept the team in striking distance. Corey Miller contributed with 14 points for Carrabec. Nick Dube and Caleb Gilmore each had four points while Sara Libby had two points.

Edward Little 35, Orono 28

AUBURN — Ben Dumont paced the Edward Little Red Eddies with 14 points in a 35-28 victory over the Orono Red Riots in a Northern Maine Unified basketball preliminary round game on Friday.

Amsden Hayes chipped in with eight points as the Red Eddies improve to 4-4 on the season. They will move on to face top-seeded Hampden Academy in the quarterfinals.

Ryan Fandel and Dylan Farnham each had five points as Orono couldn’t cut into EL’s 21-13 lead at halftime. Orono finishes the year at 3-5. 

AHL Hockey 

Syracuse 3, Portland 1

PORTLAND — Tanner Richard had a goal — the game-winner — and an assist to help propel the Syracuse Crunch to a 3-1 victory over the Portland Pirates on Friday at Cross Insurance Arena.

Richard’s goal was his eighth goal of season and came with 2:05 remaining in the second period. Assists went to Anthony DeAngelo and Tye McGinn.

Richard assisted on Yanni Gourde’s tying goal in the first period. It was Gourde’s eighth goal of year. Daniel Walcott also notched assist.

Mike Angelidis scored an empty net goal with five seconds remaining in the game.

Connor Brickley gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead 4:57 into the game. Mackenize Weegar and fellow defenseman Cameron Gaunce assisted on the goal, which was Brickley’s fifth on the season.

Sam Brittain made 30 saves in the loss while Adam Wilcox made 29 saves for the win.

NA3EHL merges with the NA3HL

The L/A Fighting Spirit and the 12 other teams of the North American 3 Eastern Hockey League will be integrated into the its sister league, the North American 3 Hockey League, for the 2016-17 season.

The NA3HL, like the NA3EHL, is a USA Hockey League Tier III Junior “A” Hockey league operated by the North American Hockey League, which is a Tier II Junior “A” League under the USA Hockey umbrella.

The merger will expand the NA3HL to 47 teams, primarily based in the midwestern and the southern United States, and has teams as far west as Montona. The league will move from six to eight divisions.

The move will allow NA3EHL teams and players to participate in the NA3HL Showcase, the NA3HL Top Prospects Tournament, the NA3HL Silver Cup Playoffs and the NA3HL’s Draft, which will take place on June 14.
